In the past week I've developed both a severe cold and I guess what one might call mild insomnia (for the past three nights, despite much effort, I have only been able to log approximately 2-3 hours of sleep).
As weightlifter, I realize that these are both symptoms of overtraining. However, I am reluctant to concede without some further advise that I am experiencing overtraining syndrome considering 1) I have not been experiencing abnormal muscle soreness, and 2) have made some pretty solid gains on my bench and other exercises during this past week.
Now, I'm wondering if it could possible by 1) The protein shake I ingest before bed acting as an accelerant (just like caffeine) that's keeping me awake, or 2) my debilitated breathing from my cold is disturbing my sleep.
Any thoughts are much appreciated.
When I faced symptoms of over training the worst ones of all was trouble sleeping, loss of appetite and lethargy.
if you can still fall asleep easily you should be fine.
in the end, if you work out 3-4 times a week and take a week off every 3 months you shouldnt ever worry about overtraining.
if you're still making gains on the bench and all then youre fine and doing it right!!

Having a few symptoms, feeling very flu like. Also have been having lower abdominal cramps and peeing alot. I have also been dealing with a lot of insomnia for the past week and I am currently 8 dpo. What are some of the early signs you were pregnant? Does it sound like any of the symptoms I am having?
yup. it ALL sounds familiar. Fatigued, I am having lower abdominal cramps, and my doctor told me that it was all normal.. Signs can show as early as one week after conception, I've heard, but all women vary. My suggestions would be schedule a doctors appt asap, so you can get the best care possible, as early as you might be. I'm still not peeing a lot, but when i fall asleep I can sleep like no other now. =)
Good luck

i cant sleep much at night anymore like i used to and when i do, its only for quick periods, lasting from 10 minutes to about an hour. then i wake up and stay up for another hour or so. i feel ok during the day, just tired like i normally would.
could this be insomnia or something else?
Yes.
I've been through insomnia and I couldn't sleep.
It would take me ages to get to sleep and when I finally did, I had dreams or just kept waking up frequently and rolling around trying to go back to sleep.
You should try to get on top of it, it can cause depression.
I got depressed and so tired I just didn't want to be awake, I even felt like I didn't want to be alive at times.
But I got through it.
You should talk to a doctor for advice on how to deal with it.
You could also try creating a regular routine for before bed to get your body into a sleep rythmn.
Such as:
Have tea
Watch TV
Have a shower/bath
Brush teeth
Have a glass of water
Go to the toilet
Go to bed
Or something like that.. whatever your comfortable with.
Do this every night… as you do each activity your body will recognize that is what you do before bed every night and start winding down to go to sleep.
Also, keep the bed for sleeping. No TV or laptop/computer in bed. No texting or calling people or anything like that.
Keep it for sleeping so that your body will recognize that if your in bed, your going to sleep, not watching TV or doing something else.
I hope this helps.

my son is 12 i wanted to give him a sleeping aide, so i asked the pharmist want would work for him?he does not recomend that i give him anything and to chek him for add! my son has been like this for a long time and i would like to get some sleep too!
It is for ADHD. He must not be on any medication for this, which is even worse on the sleep!
Get him checked out by the doctor. Insomnia is a symptom, but is one for a lot of things.
It is said us with ADD/ADHD start there day when everyone else is finishing theres. Which is true for our family. Three of us our diagnosed. Only one now is on meds for it.
Good luck and I wish you much sleep!
