Understanding The Risks Of Taking Zocor

Sunday Jan 11, 2009

Zocor is a medication used to block the production of bad cholesterol and chemicals found in the body that helps produce harmful cholesterol. Before taking Zocor, it is important that you talk to your doctor about the possible side effects of taking this medication and the effects that other medications you may already being taking, may have on them.

People, who should not take Zocor, are those who suffer from liver disease, kidney disease, drink a lot of alcohol, and suffer from blood disorders or those with muscular diseases. Sometimes patients with the above disorders or illnesses may take Zocor if their doctor monitors them regularly.

Pregnant or breast-feeding mothers should avoid taking Zocor before, during, and for some time after pregnancy. The Zocor medication is labeled as an X brand, which is a known cause of birth defects in unborn babies. The effects on babies being breastfed are still unknown, as it is not known if Zocor is transferred through breast milk to the baby. Better to error on the side of safety than take any unnecessary risks with your babies health.

The serious side effects that are associated with Zocor are muscle pain, weakness, fever, flu like symptoms, yellowing of the skin, abdominal pain, dark colored urine, or unexplained fatigue. If you experience these side effects while taking this medication, it is advisable that you stop taking Zocor immediately and seek medical attention.

The other less harmful side effects that may occur while taking Zocor are stomach upsets, heartburn, abdominal pain, constipation, or diarrhea. Coughs, headaches, and insomnia may also be experienced. If any of the above-mentioned symptoms occur, it is suggested that a patient see the doctor who prescribed them the Zocor medication. Any other symptoms that cause the patient discomfort or are unusual should also be mentioned to the doctor.

It is recommended that patients taking Zocor avoid mixing grapefruit juice with their medication, as grapefruit juice can cause severe reactions. Alcohol is also best avoided or limited while taking Zocor, as it can cause damage to the liver.

When taking Zocor, patients should not take a double dose. If the patient has missed their usual dose, that dose should be skipped and the next dose should be taken as usual. It is possible to overdose on Zocor, the effects of an overdose are nausea, diarrhea, indigestion, or severe stomach upsets. If patient suspects they have overdosed on Zocor, they should seek urgent medical attention.

It is important for anyone to only take Zocor on their doctor’s advice. I strongly encourage you NOT to self-administer Zocor without speaking to a doctor first. Prior to taking the medication, be sure and discuss the side effects and the possibility of reactions with other medications you may already being taking.

Your doctor and a health care professional will most likely be more than happy to provide you with reading material on the subject of taking Zocor and how it will affect you. Do not be shy. If your doctor doesn’t offer it, ASK FOR IT! The more you know about the risks and benefits of taking this medication, the better your experience in taking them will be.

Discover and Help Anorexic People By Learning Anorexia Symptoms

Thursday Jan 8, 2009

Anorexia nervosa is primarily a psychiatric disease, but which has negative effects on the body and can lead to serious problems, even death through starvation in extreme cases when it is not treated. It is a modern-day disease caused by society in general and the fact that nowadays slim is considered beautiful, so, many women, especially the young ones (and sometimes men) refuse to eat and start having eating disorders and lose serious weight. Stress and pressure contribute to the disease’s development.

People suffering from anorexia become thinner each day but to them it’s never enough so they try to get even more thinner which leads to serious physiological problems. They tend to stay away from socialization, because they feel that they are not thin enough and therefore rejected by society and they deny the fact that they are suffering from anything.

Treatment of anorexia nervosa can only be done with the help of family and friends, and it is hard to do because the ill person does not admit that he/she suffers from anything. But, before the treatment the disease must be discovered, and because anorexic people aren’t aware of their condition a diagnose can only be put by someone else who realizes that someone close to him is anorexic. Remember that an anorexic will never come to a doctor alone so it’s up to you to help. Therefore, you should know what are the symptoms of anorexia so that you can detect it and help whomever you discover to be suffering from it.

The first thing that should draw your attention and make you suspicious is that anorexic people suddenly start to loose a lot of weight and they become too thin. If you see that one of your friends has gotten too thin but still tries to lose more weight than that person may have anorexia. This is the basic symptom, that gives the first alarm signal. Afterwards, try to see if that person does a lot of physical exercises. Anorexics keep doing physical exercises to lose weight although they have lost too much already. And they are also obsessed with losing more weight so this is the main thing that they are talking about, diets and weight-losing.

You may also check for other physical symptoms of the illness. For example, women who are suffering from anorexia don’t have a period anymore, which has severe consequences over their body. This may be harder to detect in some cases. The sensitivity to lower temperatures decreases at anorexic people so they may feel cold when the room is cool. Insomnia, mood swings, dry skin, hair problems (either loss of hair, either an increase in body hair may occur, depending on the patient) and finally constipation are characteristic to someone suffering from anorexia. Anorexia also has less visible symptoms like osteoporosis and low blood pressure.

So if you discover that one of the people you know are suffering from this illness seek advice from a doctor as soon as you can until things get worse. Treatment is difficult and long, so the illness must be discovered as soon as possible.

3 Keys to Managing Career Burnout

Monday Jan 5, 2009

I recently gave a presentation on this topic at an Annual Conference of Human Resource Professionals. The room was full! So I thought the information might be timely for some of you.

What is burnout? What are the symptoms and causes? And if you’re experiencing it, what can you do?

The dictionary states that burnout is “exhaustion of physical or emotional strength or motivation usually as a result of prolonged stress or frustration.” I put usually in italics because even when you love your work like I do, you can overdo and find yourself burned out.

Symptoms of burn out can be physical, behavioral and spiritual. Here are some signs that you’re heading for burn out:

• fatigue • muscle tension • headaches • insomnia • not keeping commitments • lack of effectiveness • irritability • anxiety • sense of emptiness-nothing left to give • lack of joy • not able to laugh

Causes of burnout can come from within ourselves or from our organizations. Some common causes are high expectations of ourselves, denial of our basic needs like food and sleep, poor time management skills, inability to set boundaries or to say no.

Organizational causes can be a culture of competitiveness, or one in which being constantly busy and overworked is prized with email and phone calls taken along on “vacations.” Insufficient training in new job roles or cramped, noisy environments can also contribute to burnout.

Here are 3 ways to manage burnout: change the stressful situation, reduce your vulnerability to stress and/or change the way you react to stress that cannot be changed:

1. Change the stressful situation if you can. If there are some high stress aspects of your job, see if you can rotate this task with others. Limit the number of hours you are under stress. Spend some time on career/life planning. Set your priorities and live by them.

2. You can reduce your vulnerability to stress by taking care of your physical self with good nutrition, exercise and enough sleep. Avoid nicotine and don’t overdo caffeine and alcohol. Surround yourself with supportive people, work with a coach who will listen to you deeply and help you to create a good balance of work and other aspects of your life.

3. Finally, change the way you react to stress. You can do this by modifying your self-talk and self-criticism. Learn techniques to calm yourself – a few deep breaths can bring you right back to a centered place, able to face whatever stress is in front of you. Become a self-care expert and have some fun.

Depression Relief Found With Regular Exercise

Friday Jan 2, 2009

Most of us recognize the benefits we can expect from exercise. Engaging in regular exercise, including both cardiovascular and resistance workouts, brings such benefits as lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, stronger bones, improved balance, a lower risk of some cancers and of course weight loss. One bonus that is often overlooked, however, is how exercise can improve our mental health.

Baesd upon solid research, exercise has proven to be an effective alternative to medication for people who suffer from depression.

More that 17 million American adults are diagnosed with depression each year, but there are many more that suffer occasional bouts of ‘feeling down’ and are not diagnosed.

You might be depressed if you have feelings of anxiety, are sad or have ‘empty’ feelings, lack the motivation for ordinary activities, experience sleep problems including fatigue, insomnia or oversleeping, have eating disorders, feel worthless or have frequent thoughts of death.

The good news is that not everyone who suffers from depression needs to be on antidepressants. Exercise may be a solution for those who wish to fight depression without medication. Duke University Medical Center published a study on the effects exercise has on depression. The 16-week study showed similar results for the group that took medication as the group that exercised.

A third group that combined exercise with medication showed the greatest improvement.

To reap the depression-fighting benefits of exercise, you don’t need to spend hours in the gym, either. Even small amounts of exercise will release the endorphins that make us feel better. Develop an exercise plan while you are not feeling depressed and you will have a much better chance of keeping it up than trying to motivate yourself to start an exercise plan after you’re already depressed.

Women are two to three times more likely than men to suffer from depression, with one in five women experiencing major depression in her lifetime.

Stacy, a young mom from Nampa and Pick Up The Pace health club member, said “Last winter, during the inversion I really suffered. I couldn’t even get motivated to clean my house or cook a decent meal. I was on the verge of having to get a prescription. I started exercising regularly and this winter I sailed through the inversion with no problem.”

Margaret, who recently lost her husband, has discovered that exercise is better than grief therapy. “It’s a lot cheaper than seeing a therapist and I’m doing something good for my body. Sitting at home crying every day is not an option. I still grieve, but now I have the energy and motivation to do something else with my days.”

Before starting beginning any exercise plan, consult with your physician. Do not discontinue any prescribed mediation without consulting with your physician.

Tongkat Ali – the Nature’s Answer to Steroids

Tuesday Dec 30, 2008

Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia), also called Longjack and Pasak Bumi, is a tree that grows in Malaysia and Indonesia. The root of this tree has been used in these regions for many years as an aphrodisiac and to treat various sexual dysfunctions. Scientific research in recent years has shown support for the libido enhancing and sexual health qualities of this herb.

One of the original uses of this herb was as a malaria medication. Its use as an aphrodisiac and sexual function enhancer was a fortunate side effect of this original use. It was used for years without any knowledge of what brought about the improvement in sexual desire and function. Research soon looked at the possible causes for these positive results.

Tongkat Ali has been shown to increase the body’s natural production of testosterone, the male sex hormone. Testosterone is responsible for the development of the male sex organs and maintaining the health of those organs. It is also responsible for the male sex drive and secondary sex characteristics such as facial hair and enlarging of the larynx (resulting in deepening of the voice.) Females need testosterone as well, although not in as large a quantity as males. Testosterone is responsible for a healthy sex drive in women and increases the sensitivity of the erogenous zones. Both males and females need testosterone to help stimulate the metabolism, support fat burning, produce red blood cells and stimulate muscle growth.

Studies have shown that Tongkat Ali does have a libido enhancing effect on animals, and recently the same has been shown in human trials. The increase in testosterone brings about an increase in sex drive, improvement in sexual function, and reversal of some erectile dysfunction issues. One study found behavioral changes in rats that were given Tongkat Ali. Instead of roaming and exploring the cage like other rats, the ones given the herb stayed closer to the females. Ladies, this probably doesn’t mean that your man will join you in the kitchen for dishes or sit down for a nice heart to heart, but he may want to spend more “quality” time with you. Women who take this herbal supplement may notice an increase in libido as well, resulting in true “quality” time.

The testosterone enhancing qualities of Tongkat Ali are also of interest to the bodybuilding community. Testosterone is an important hormone in building muscle mass and strength. Testosterone production normally begins to drop off after thirty years of age. This leads to a slowing of the metabolism, loss of muscle mass, lower energy levels, and decrease in sex drive and function. With all of these issues related to decreased testosterone production it is no wonder people look for ways to keep testosterone levels up. Those interested in building more muscle mass are especially interested in boosting testosterone levels. The increase in sex drive is a welcome side benefit for most.

Many men and women with decreased sex drive or other sexual dysfunction issues seek help from their physician. One common treatment is to use testosterone replacement therapy. This involves injecting testosterone into the body to replace that which the body no longer produces. The problem with this approach is that the body reads the new level of testosterone and no longer strives to make its own. This approach does not correct the underlying problem of reduced production. Herbal supplementation that supports the body’s own production of testosterone, such as Tongkat Ali use, may help to correct this problem.

Herbal supplements generally are safer than pharmaceutical or hormonal therapies. However, Tongkat Ali does carry some possible side effects, especially with larger doses. These include restlessness, insomnia, anxiety and a slight decrease in immune functions. It is important to start out with small doses and only increase if no side effects are noted.
