Its confusing me lol
There was a UK documentary on this last year. There's a family in Italy who suffer from it, and sadly they're dying from it one by one, the father then the son and now the daughter (think I got that right), it was their family doctor who diagnosed and 'named' the disease.
Basically if I remember rightly, out of the blue they suddenly stopped being able to sleep, and the body just gets worn out because it can't function without sleep. Probably die of heart attack I expect.
Not sure why it's confusing you though, but hope this has helped.

About 70% of the time I have no trouble falling asleep: I usually fall asleep about a half hour. The other 25% of the time, it takes me about 1 hour to 2 1/2 hours to fall asleep. Then the last 5% of the time, it can take between 3 hours and 6 hours to fall asleep. This happens about once every month and a half, but I don't know when its gonna strike. This past Monday, I couldn't sleep all night: I might have got about 1 1/2 of sleep. The next two nights after that, I had what I get 25% of the time (1 hour to 2 1/2 hours) because I was worried I won't fall asleep. Then last night, I fell asleep in 30 minutes.
I was also reading stuff about Fatal Familial Insomnia: this week was the first time I heard of it and that worried me more. I don't think I have it. But what can be the main cause for these bouts of insomnia?
I am 22 years old and in graduate school. It can be age related or stress maybe??
Stress usually causes insomnia. You may want to try and get a balanced diet, avoid eating just before bedtime, avoid drinking caffeinated or alcohol beverages 1 hr or 2 before bedtime and incorporate exercise into your daily routine. This is definitely going to help with your insomnia. If your insomnia is due to depression or is persistent you should probably go see a doctor as he may need to prescribe sleeping tablets for you.
Hope this helps

You are giving yourself stress about going to sleep. If you can't sleep after about 15-20 minutes get out of bed and go read a non-stimulating book in another room. Also you can try and NOT SLEEP, while in bed. Lastly, you can us a breathing technique, in nostrils to a count of 4 , hold until 7, and then breathe out until 8. Keep doing this. One last technique, picture yourself as a kid, walking from your house into town and looking into every store window in town..
Make sure you are getting exercise, 8 glasses of water a day , and no alcohol, nicotine, or caffeine at least 4-8 hours before you go to sleep

Since like 1 year ago, she has fatal familial insomnia disease. It is really rare. I know that that disease doesn't have any cure for it and she will eventually die from that disease. Right now, she is in a coma. I love her so much. I do not want her to die. What should I do?
Sorry. I am very sorry to hear that but your girlfriend WILL die.
