OTC medication: Diphenhydramine
Herbs: Valerian
Dietary supplement: Melatonin
You may also try Aromatherapy, Acupuncture, Relaxation and Meditation or Yoga
Melatonin is great (and it's CHEAP!) Or Tylenol PM.

I found that none of the OTC drugs worked for me! But one interesting thing I noticed is that most OTC sleep aids contain the exact same ingredient and dosage as what you find in OTC allergy stuff, like any general antihistamine (Benadryl, etc.). Most of the time it's cheaper to get the allergy pill than it is to get the sleep aid…just a little tip.
I ended up having to get prescription stuff though, cuz nothing worked well enough for me.

The problem with benedryl (diphenhydramine) is that it is relatively short acting…usually about 4 hours. Some people do well with longer-acting antihistamines…look in the drug store isle for alternatives. (CLOR-TRIMETON is an example)
Another option is Valerian root, sometimes used in combination with hops as a compounded OTC formula. It seems to be safe and effective for mild to moderate insomnia.
Lastly don't forget sleep hygiene…things that you can do to help your body to sleep better. Here's a link with the list.

Good luck and sweet dreams.
